Ensuring safe and high-quality milk requires strong practices from the farm all the way to the collection center. At the Rwanda One Health Innovation Network (ROHIN), we provide practical training to both dairy farmers and milk transporters to strengthen milk safety, reduce contamination, and improve overall value chain efficiency.
Our training emphasizes the shared responsibility between farmers and transporters in protecting milk quality. Farmers learn proper milking hygiene, clean equipment handling, rapid cooling, and safe storage practices. Transporters are trained on maintaining cleanliness, using appropriate containers, and ensuring proper temperature control during transport.
Key topics include:
- Clean and hygienic milking procedures
- Immediate cooling and safe storage of milk on-farm
- Use of clean, sealed, and food-grade transport containers
- Maintaining cold chain during transportation
- Preventing adulteration and contamination
- Understanding risks of antimicrobial residues and how to avoid them
- Good communication between farmers and transporters to maintain quality standards
By empowering both farmers and milk transporters with essential skills and knowledge, ROHIN helps maintain the safety and freshness of milk throughout the value chain. This contributes to better public health, stronger dairy markets, and a more resilient One Health system across Rwanda.
