At the Rwanda One Health Innovation Network (ROHIN), we are committed to promoting healthy dairy herds and safe milk production through practical training that empowers farmers to manage mastitis effectively while reducing unnecessary antimicrobial use.
Mastitis is one of the most common and costly diseases in dairy farming. Through hands-on training, farmers learn early detection, proper udder hygiene, and preventive management practices that significantly reduce mastitis cases at the farm level. By preventing infections before they start, farmers can improve milk quality, increase production, and safeguard animal welfare.
Our training focuses on:
- Good milking hygiene and proper teat cleaning
- Regular udder checks to identify early signs of mastitis
- Use of clean equipment and proper sanitation
- Dry cow therapy best practices
- Maintaining comfortable, clean housing for animals
- Accurate record-keeping for herd health
A key component of the training is promoting responsible antimicrobial use. Farmers learn when antibiotics are truly necessary, how to follow veterinary guidance, and the importance of respecting withdrawal periods to prevent antimicrobial residues in milk. By reducing misuse of antibiotics, we help combat antimicrobial resistance and protect both animal and human health.
Through this initiative, ROHIN supports farmers in adopting sustainable, practical solutions that strengthen dairy production and contribute to a healthier One Health ecosystem for Rwanda.
